Yes, this is basically how hair color works: It attaches itself to the hair shaft (*immature giggle*) permanently, so it changes the actual color of the hair (permanent at least), and that's why it can't be undone (which is also probably why it's so expensive to fix). The lighter the hair, the easier it is to dye. Thankfully, I was blessed as a blonde. (GO GENETICS!) It's much harder to dye your hair if you're a dark brunette. Once you have the darker dye in your hair though, it's more difficult to go the other direction.
