I mean, come on, the guy was totally justified...
He marries this beautiful woman who he loves... and then the judge lusts after her and so he convicts Sweeney on this false charge and sends him off... and invites the poor woman to his house in a guise of "I'm sorry" and then rapes her... and then takes the daughter as his ward... and the wife kills herself... and then Sweeney returns and is very displeased... and there'd be no justice and then the creeper wants to marry his ward! That is Sweeney's daughter!
And there's music to go along with it.
Good times.
